What is an essay?
Though the term essay has come to be understood as a kind of writing in Modern English, its roots provide us with some useful insights. The word comes into the English language during the French influence on Middle English; dispersing it back farther, we find that the French form of the word stems from the Latin verb exigere, which means"to examine, test, or (literally) to push out." Through the excavation of the ancient word, we are able to unearth the essence of the academic article: to encourage students to test or examine their ideas concerning a particular topic.
Essays are shorter pieces of writing that frequently require the student to hone a number of abilities like close reading, analysis, comparison and contrast, persuasion, conciseness, clarity, and exposition. As is evidenced by this list of attributes, there's much to be gained by the student who strives to succeed at composition writing.
The objective of an article is to encourage pupils to develop ideas and theories in their writing together with the management of little more than their own notions (it could be handy to observe the essay as the conversation of a study paper). Thus, essays are (by nature) concise and need clarity in direction and purpose. This means there is no room for the pupil's thoughts to wander or stray from her or his purpose; the writing needs to be deliberate and intriguing.
